Why basement wiring is different

This isn't 'add a few outlets.' It's a load, safety, and permit exercise.

Basements are wet zones

Concrete floors, humidity, and slab-adjacent walls mean GFCI protection and moisture-aware fixture selection aren't optional.

Living-area rules apply below grade

Once a basement is finished it's habitable space. AFCI, tamper-resistant receptacles, and interconnected smoke alarms all kick in.

Panels rarely have spare capacity

A load calculation against your existing panel is step one. Adding suite loads or heat pumps often triggers a 100A→200A upgrade.

Secondary suites are their own code chapter

Separate branch circuits, interconnected alarms between suite and primary dwelling, egress, and sometimes metering — municipality-specific.

Zone

  • Fan/light on switched circuit with humidity or timer control
  • No convenience receptacles on the bathroom circuit for other rooms

Laundry Room

Zone

Dedicated appliance loads. Never share with bathroom, kitchen, or general circuits.

  • Dedicated 20A for washer receptacle
  • Dedicated 30A/240V for electric dryer (if not gas)
  • GFCI protection on laundry receptacles

Mechanical / Furnace Room

Zone

Service access, dedicated circuits, and clear working space around the panel.

  • Service receptacle within 7.5 m of HVAC equipment

Legal Suite Kitchen

Zone

A secondary-suite kitchen is a full kitchen for code — same circuit rules as upstairs.

  • Two 20A T-slot split receptacle (or 15A) circuits for counter receptacles
  • Dedicated 40A/240V for range (or gas + 20A oven/microwave)
  • Dedicated for fridge, dishwasher, microwave, hood fan
Watch for: Treating a suite kitchen as a 'kitchenette' with one 15A circuit

Wet Bar

Zone

Not a kitchen — but still a wet location with GFCI, fridge, and often ice-maker loads.

  • GFCI-protected 20A receptacle circuit for counter
  • Dedicated for bar fridge / beverage centre if constant load
  • Optional dedicated for ice-maker or under-counter dishwasher
Watch for: Wet-bar fridge tied into general-purpose circuit that trips overnight

Home Office

Zone

High plug-load room. Plan around desk placement, video calls, and network gear.

  • One or two AFCI 15A general circuits
  • Consider dedicated 20A for workstation with multiple monitors + laser printer

Legal secondary suites

Wiring for a legal basement suite

A legal secondary suite is one of the biggest value-adds a Canadian homeowner can make — and one of the most common places wiring shortcuts get caught at inspection or during sale. Treat the suite as a full dwelling for electrical purposes, because that's exactly what the code does.

Rule of thumb: if you'd expect a circuit upstairs, expect it in the suite. Kitchens, bathrooms, and laundry rooms don't get simplified just because they're smaller.
  • Separate branch circuits for suite loads — do not extend upstairs kitchen or laundry circuits into the suite.
  • Full kitchen circuit rules apply: split receptacles, dedicated fridge, dishwasher, microwave, range.
  • Interconnected smoke alarms between the suite and the primary dwelling. CO alarms near sleeping areas and fuel-burning appliances.
  • Egress windows in every sleeping room, sized to your provincial building code.
  • Bathroom fan on humidity or timer control, ducted to exterior.
  • Panel labelling that clearly identifies suite vs. primary circuits.
  • Municipal variation: Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, Toronto, and Ottawa each have their own secondary-suite programs — confirm locally.
  • Separate metering: required in some municipalities, prohibited in others, optional in most. Ask before running feeders.
